To apply for the Government Warm Homes Loan Scheme you will need to confirm during the finance application process that you:
Landlords only: The discounted rate is a business subsidy provided under the Minimal Financial Assistance (MFA) rules and subject to a £315,000 limit over three years.
It's a standard regulated loan from us. You borrow the cost of your equipment and install and repay it in monthly instalments. The only difference is that Government support gives you a lower interest rate. Our usual affordability and credit checks, and your loan agreement's terms, apply.
You get a lower interest rate than an equivalent standard loan — so you pay less each month and less interest overall. That makes low-carbon technology more affordable to buy and spread over time.
Yes. You own it outright. The scheme finances a purchase, not a lease or subscription, so the equipment is yours and stays with your home.
Yes — you can settle early under the normal terms of your loan agreement. There's nothing extra to repay to the loan.
Yes, subject to your loan's normal overpayment terms. Overpaying reduces what you owe, and the Government support continues on your remaining balance.
The loan is yours, not the property's. Depending on your type of loan, you can usually keep repaying it or settle it when you sell — check your loan agreement. The equipment stays with the home.
To run and check the scheme, the UK Government Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) collects details such as your name and contact details, your property address, information about your loan, and the technology installed and its certification.
It's used to administer, monitor and evaluate the scheme and to prevent fraud, and may be shared with other public bodies for those purposes. It's held securely and in line with data protection law — the full details are in our Privacy Notice.
Yes. To protect public money, the Government — or someone acting for it — can ask to visit your property at a reasonable time to check the installation. Agreeing to this is a condition of a scheme-supported loan. If you'd prefer not to, we can talk to you about a standard (non-scheme) loan instead.
Solar panels, home battery storage, and heat pumps (air source).
Each technology has a maximum loan amount — for example, £15,000 for solar or a battery if purchased separately or £30,000 if purchased together, and our usual affordability and credit checks apply. You can use the scheme alongside the Boiler Upgrade Scheme or Home Energy Scotland grant for a heat pump (the loan covers the cost above the grant), but additional government grants (which may include local government/local initiatives) should not be used in conjunction with the discounted loan.
Yes, you can use a government BUS grant in conjunction with the Warm Homes Loan Scheme. The BUS grant in England and Wales as well as the Home Energy Scotland Grant can be used alongside the scheme.
Yes. Private landlords applying on a personal basis can borrow to improve a property they let — not through a company or SPV.
